And for the price you have to pay on Tidal ($25.99/month vs $9.99/month on the other services) is not worth it for me. But the truth is that the difference in sound quality between the three isn’t very noticeable. Now if you upgrade your headphones to something of high quality then you’re getting serious and might notice these differences if you’re into production like I am. If you’re using the standard Apple headphones or something similar, this isn’t really that big of a deal. Spotify came out last with their 320 kbps mp3 encoding. I just felt like it sounded a little crispier than Spotify. I read somewhere that Apple claims they have a smaller file size than Spotify, but yet a higher quality in sound. The second best for me was Apple Music, with their 256k AAC encoding. This can certainly make things appear as if they are louder, clearer, and more present. And I’ll go ahead and accredit the loudness to better definition in the high and low frequencies. What do I mean by depth? I could hear the room better where the music was recorded. In a nutshell, It sounded slightly louder and had more depth. Tidal, with their 1.4 mbps loss-less quality. I couldn’t find how to do it in Apple Music, but supposedly it should automatically be on their highest setting while using the service on WiFi. By the way, in order to use high definition playback you must manually select the option in both Spotify and Tidal. I used my Shure SE215-K headphones, which I trust and know very well. I listened to the following three songs on all services: Huarache Lights by HOT CHIP, Wee by JOHN SCOFIELD, and Careful You by TV ON THE RADIO. We’ll begin with the main concern for me, sound quality. Here are my findings which hopefully will help you decide which service suits you best.
